History of Skiff Rowing
The sport, East Coast Skiff Rowing, was started in Dublin in the mid 19th century. During this era Dockers would race out to incoming ships and the winners would get the pilotage and docking contract.
The sport is still very strong today in Ringsend, Dalkey, Bray, Greystones, Wicklow, Arklow, Courtown and Dun Laoghaire. Greystones Rowing Club owns the oldest boat on the east coast, The Shamrock 1. This boat was built in 1949 by Smith’s of Ringsend. It is still used today by our club for racing up and down the coast.
